Miss North and Miss Wilkinson are our handwriting subject leaders. This is what they say about handwriting. Handwriting was always my favourite lesson at school. I loved practising the different shapes and learning the variety of joins - I still remember the day when my Year 4 teacher gave me my first 'pen license'. More recently, modern technology has dramatically changed the way we communicate through writing. However, despite the increased use of computers for writing, the skill of handwriting remains just as important now as it was then. Miss North Handwriting is a personal and distinctive way to express thoughts, ideas and communication. Handwriting is one of the biggest improvements we see our children make over the year. It is amazing when children look back to their work from September and feel proud of their improvements. I am obsessed with stationery and love to write things down (including marking books)just so I can use my collection of fancy pens, felt tips and highlighters. Miss Wilkinson |
Handwriting is an important part of our curriculum at St Paul's CE Primary School.
In order for pupils to be able to communicate their ideas to others they need to be able to write fluently.

Pupils in Reception complete activities to develop both their fine and gross motor control so that they are ready to write.
As the Reception pupils learn sounds in their daily Read Write Inc sessions, they also learn how to form the letter (or grapheme) that represents the sound. To help them to remember the formation they learn a 'rhyme' to go with it.

Pupils in Reception practice their letter formation on a daily basis. If we feel that you child needs additional support to develop their fine motor skills, they may access a programme called 'Pegs to Paper'. This is a programme that we have delivered successfully over recent years.

Handwriting in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2
To help all children to develop a confident and legible handwriting style we have adopted the Nelson Handwriting scheme as pupils move into Key Stage 1 and beyond.
Through the use of workbooks, textbooks and online resources and animations pupils develop a handwriting style which ensures that they meet the 'expected standard' in the end of Key Stage writing teacher assessments.
We also use the Nelson Handwriting font within school on electronic documents, on classroom displays and for work included in pupils books.
